I recently sat down with Allen Burgess to discuss his impressive achievement of earning a Distinction in his Higher National Certificate in Civil Engineering from Oaklands College. Allen, with experience in the construction industry but no formal qualifications, chose to pursue this course to upskill and formalise his knowledge.
Balancing his studies with family responsibilities was challenging, requiring him to sacrifice his free time. “I set a clear goal, which made it easier to stay motivated,” Allen shared. He found the course highly relevant to his work, applying what he learned directly to his day-to-day tasks.
Allen appreciated the full support from SEC Group, including day release and funding, along with mentorship from colleagues like Dhinay, Harry, and Paul. Reflecting on his journey, Allen noted, “I now have a deeper understanding of regulatory requirements and the ‘why’ behind them.”
His advice to others considering further education? “If it’s important to you, just go for it—you’ll find the time”. He emphasised that returning to education, though daunting, is always worth it.
Please join us in congratulating Allen Burgess on achieving this outstanding distinction in his Higher National Certificate in Civil Engineering. His success is a testament to what can be achieved with clear goals, determination, and the right support. Congratulations, Allen, on this well-deserved recognition!
