Mobile shelving

Mobile Shelving

Mobile shelving acts as a high-density storage system reducing the need for static aisles.

How does mobile shelving work?

It is an ideal solution when floor space is at a premium by condensing the shelves together and creating a movable access aisle. The mobile shelving system is mounted on bases, which move along tracks fitted to the floor. These mobile bases can be adapted to suit any type of system including longspan, small parts and document shelving.

System Features

The mobile shelving system is mounted on bases, which move along tracks fitted to the floor. These mobile bases can be adapted to suit any type of system including longspan, small parts and document shelving.

There are a variety of configurations to consider when choosing a mobile shelving system, including how the shelves are actually moved into position. For example, they can be controlled either by a mechanical assist, which involves the operator turning a spoked handle, or automatically by the push of a button.

Lateral Vs Compact Mobile Shelving

Lateral mobile shelving systems are made up of cabinets that are positioned in rows, where each cabinet is directly in front of another. The cabinets at the front of the system can be quickly and easily moved along a sliding track in either direction which allows access to the shelving units at the rear of the mobile shelving configuration. This set up is ideal for businesses that have a lower volume of documents or product stock.

With compact shelving, each cabinet slides on rails creating a new aisle in between each cabinet row, for easy access. Using a compact mobile shelving configuration is suitable for high-density storage of large volume product items and when space is at a premium.

Mobile Shelving Control Options

When choosing your mobile shelving solutions you have three options for how the shelving units are moved by your staff:

  • Manual – particularly used for lateral configurations, the cabinet rows are physically manoeuvred by the operator.
  •  Mechanical – most compact units offer a mechanical option to move the shelves, usually a rotary handle which can be turned in the desired direction to allow access to the shelving units.
  • Powered – with heavy-duty mobile shelving installations you have an option of a powered control button that moves the shelves automatically.

The right mobile shelving system

There are a number of factors to consider when looking at mobile shelving systems to select the most appropriate solution:

  • The type of products or documents you need to store
  • The volume of stock required for storage, both in the short and longer-term
  • The amount of warehouse or commercial space available as well as the layout configuration
  • How warehouse staff or operators will access the items
  • Once the initial assessment of your mobile shelving requirement has been completed it will be easier to select the most appropriate mobile shelving solution.

System Benefits

  • Easy to clean and maintain
  • Available in Heavy Duty and are ideal for bulk storage, archives and heavy stock zones
  • Available in Medium Duty which is best suited for areas such as warehouses, workshops and industrial environments
  • Trackless – Providing you with quick access to all items stored in the shelving system. It is also easy to clean and maintain.
  • It offers a variety of control options, such as being physically manoeuvred by an operator turning a handle, or automatically by the push of a button

Common Uses

Mobile shelving systems can cater for a wide range of operations. However, they are particularly suitable for the following:
