Push-Back Pallet Racking

Versatile pallet storage system which uses gravity to store and release pallets in deep configurations.

How does Push-Back Racking work?

Dynamic push-back racking enables pallets to be stored over four deep. Pallets are placed in the front position, and subsequent pallets are then added by ‘pushing back’ the front pallet.

To retrieve a pallet the procedure is reversed, with the pallets returning to the pick face under gravity (due to the slightly sloped storage lanes). Stock rotation is therefore based upon the last-in-first-out principle (LIFO). It is also essential that each lane is dedicated to one SKU only to allow for load marshaling.

This system makes excellent use of cubic and floor space. It also has the benefit of being accessible using most types of handling truck.

System Benefits

• A high-density storage system which can store at least four pallets per lane
• It offers a lower capital cost than other dynamic systems (particularly on shorter depths)
• Immediate replenishment as the pallets roll to the pick face
• Compatible with most types of forklift trucks

Common Uses

Push-back solutions are very versatile and can cater for a wide range of operations. However, they are particularly suitable for warehouses that possess the following:

• Storage of non-perishable products or items with long expiration dates
• Need for temperature-controlled areas such as chillers
• Products with a low number of units for each SKU.

Is a Push-Back Pallet Racking System Right for my Warehouse?

A push-back pallet racking system has many advantages and differs from gravity live storage systems such as Pallet Live in that push-back systems are designed for LIFO (last in, first out) warehouse management. The loading and unloading of each pallet is carried out from the same aisle where a forklift truck is used to deposit pallets up to four deep.

Types of Push-Back Pallet Racking

The mechanics of a push back pallet racking operation is around the process of one unit load i.e. pallet of goods, being used to ‘push-back’ any existing unit loads from within the selected aisle towards the back of the racking structure and is achieved by either rollers or shuttles through the high density storage system.

For unloading of pallet loads, the slight incline of the push back racking structure allows the flow of pallets forward to the front of the pick face.

There are two types of the push back system put-back pallet racking systems to consider depending on the element used to facilitate movement of the pallet, namely rollers or shuttles.

For push-back pallet racking using rollers, the pallets are pushed towards the back of the racking by sliding on roller beds fixed to the structure which have a slight incline. Where a push-back pallet racking system uses shuttles, here the pallets are loaded onto a series of shuttles, which are placed on rails, also with a slight incline.
