How do drive-in racking systems work?

Drive-in racking is an ideal solution when high-density storage is required. It is very similar to block stacking, as pallets are stored on cantilevered rails. Thereby making the loading and retrieval of pallets simpler, but also prevents goods from becoming damaged.

A drive-in pallet racking system enables more pallets to be stored per cubic metre than any other storage system available on the market. Stock rotation is however limited, so the system is best suited to the storage of seasonal goods or bulk goods of the same type.

Wide Aisle Racking is one of the most common pallet storage systems in the world. It is an extremely versatile and cost-effective form of drive-in pallet racking that can be utilised without the need for specialised handling equipment or driver training. This form of racking is constructed in single or double runs, which are separated by a wide aisle allowing 100% selectivity of products.

Beam levels can be placed at any height, and the racking can be configured to take virtually any form or configuration of unit load. Racking can be re-engineered and reconfigured at any time in the future and is simple to install and move if necessary.

Adjustable Pallet Racking is in such high usage throughout the world, that a vast array of accessories and ancillary products have been developed to enable even further flexibility. In particular, these products can be used to adapt the racking to picking purposes and to handle non-palletised products through the use of decked levels or other adaptation.

Drive-In vs. Drive-Through Pallet Racking

A drive-in racking system offers a high-density storage solution by optimising the cube of the warehouse by reducing the number of operating aisles for forklift trucks.
Compact pallet racking can be either via a Drive In pallet racking system, with only one access point on the aisle, or Drive-Through pallet racking, with an entrance and exit at either end of the aisle.
Drive In and Drive Through pallet racking storage systems are ideal when you need to store similar products with a large number of pallets of the same SKU and are most appropriate where space utilisation is more important than the selectivity of stored loads.

Drive in pallet racking (LIFO – Last in, First out)

This is the most common compact racking system and only needs a single access aisle for the forklift. It uses the LIFO method, so the last pallet load-in is the first one out.

Drive through pallet racking (FIFO – First in, First out)

This solution requires two access points, one on each end of the racking aisle. It uses the FIFO method, as the first pallet load-in is the first one out. With access from both the front and rear of the aisles, drive through compact racking is more suited to warehouse operations with a high turnover of products.
Operation for both a Drive-In and Drive-Through pallet racking system is solely by industrial trucks and sideways-seated stackers are particularly suited to this method of the storage system as they provide the operator with a clear field of vision when reversing out of the aisle.
