Automation and AMRs

Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) automate key warehouse activities that enhance efficiency and productivity ideal for e-commerce and fast-paced fulfilment.

For applications where efficiency and flexibility are of key importance, automation and AMRs can often be an ideal solution, especially in high-growth markets.

Combined with ELSA, our data-driven design process, hybrid solutions that combine elements of automation alongside manual processes can help businesses improve performance in a manageable and cost-effective way. Automation can provide significant benefits in warehouses and distribution centres including enhanced pick performance, reduced labour costs and reduced order errors.

Types of automation a warehouse design can incorporate:

  • Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) – can easily automate picking, replenishment or sortation activities.
  • Automated Guided Vehicle (AGVs) – work independently from warehouse staff and follow pre-defined routes marked out within a warehouse.
  • Automated Storage & Retrieval Systems (AS/RS) – can easily pack, store, sort, and retrieve inventory.
  • Pick-to-Light and Put-to-Light Systems – use mobile barcode scanning devices synced to digital light displays to direct warehouse pickers where to place or pick up selected items.
  • Automated Sortation Systems – identify items on a conveyor system and divert them to a warehouse location often used in order fulfilment for receiving, picking, packing and shipping.
  • Shuttle Technology – computer-controlled systems that use shuttles to put away, store and retrieve goods in a racking structure. They minimize the need for forklifts to enter lanes.

Autonomous Mobile Robotics

Flexible and intelligent, AMRs can be deployed in a variety of picking and sortation applications.  They can navigate without pre-defined routes or walkways and can be fitted with tools for gripping, forks or conveyors and work independently or in a team.
