Warehouse Health & Safety and Rack Safety Inspections

Helping your business maintain safe working environments for your staff. Pallet Racking Inspections for Warehouse Health and Safety by Approved SARI Rack Safety Inspectors

We can provide HSE-advised inspections officiated by an independent SEMA Approved Rack Inspector

Legislation requires that your warehouse pallet racking and shelving systems must be inspected no less than annually by a competent SARI (SEMA Approved Rack Inspector) health and safety executive.

A warehouse safety inspection could help to fulfil your obligations under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and Provision & Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 1998.

When working in or around warehouses its of the utmost importance to have a good knowledge of the health and safety procedures that should be carried out, and how to best operate machinery, lifting equipment and storage devices to avoid injuring staff or yourself. There have unfortunately been a high number of injuries and even deaths involving vehicles such as fork lift trucks, falling objects and from hazardous substances – fire safety warehouses has also proven to be an issue.

Appropriate training in the serious risks, safety measures, and knowledge on how to follow good housekeeping practices in your warehouse can help protect warehouse staff from serious injury and properly maintain a safe working environment. You should also ensure that all staff have access to eye protection, hard hats, and knowledge of the potential hazards.
SEC Storage can help you with all aspects of warehouse health & safety, racking safety and fire safety, and provide HSE-advised inspections officiated by an independent SEMA Approved Rack Inspector. We can also carry out pallet racking repairs should your racking be identified as being damaged.

Pallet Rack Safety Inspections – Pallet Racking Health and Safety Law

To ensure that a racking installation continues to be serviceable and safe to use for manual handling and the maximum safe working load, your storage equipment, forklift trucks, warning lights, valuable resources, personal protective equipment and mechanical handling techniques should be regularly inspected, and emergency procedures practiced and regularly maintained.

The frequency of your warehouse safety inspection and racking safety inspection depends on a variety of factors that are particular to the site concerned, and should be determined by a nominated ‘person responsible for rack safety’ (PRRS) to suit the operating conditions of the warehouse.

Hierarchical Approach

The warehouse safety racking inspection follows a hierarchical approach using several levels of inspection:

Immediate Reporting

As soon as a serious risk, safety problem or damage is observed by an employee, it should immediately be reported to the PRRS. You should have control measures and systems in place for reporting damage and defects. Employees should receive training, information and instruction on the safe operation of the racking system and warning signs, including the parts affecting their safety and the safety of others, and should know that the racking will need regular inspection.

Visual Inspections

The PRRS should ensure that a racking safety inspection is made at weekly or other regular intervals based on risk assessment. A formal written record should be maintained.

Expert Inspections

A technically competent person should carry out each racking safety inspection at intervals of not more than 12 months. A written report should be submitted to the PRRS with observations and proposals for any action necessary. A technically competent person might be a trained specialist within an organisation, a specialist from the rack supplier, or an independent, qualified rack inspector.
