What is warehouse automation?

Warehouse automation is the process of using automated storage systems to replace repetitive tasks through a combination of machine learning and experience, with intentions to remove time consuming or labour intensive duties that involve repetitive manual data entry and analysis and physical work from warehouse workers.

Warehouse automation systems being implemented enables employees to focus on other important tasks that need more time dedicated to them, for instance quality control.

The two types of warehouse automation solutions are digital or physical automation.

Digital automation technology, such as a warehouse management system, relies on electronics and software in order to reduce manual processes. This improves customer and vendor focus and experience by providing them with more information, and can at the same time replace manual inventory tracking.

Physical automation refers to the use of reducing employee labour by using warehouse automation equipment, often done with the use of automated guided vehicles. These machines are able to minimise the physical work and effort of warehouse employees by transferring goods.
