Benefits of Multi-Tier Shelving in Warehouses

The demand for warehousing space continues to be at a premium so it’s important to maximise the use of the entire interior footprint available, which means both the height and width of the building.

In order to utilise the full height with warehouse storage solutions, we need to look at the best way to store products to ensure capacity is maximised, pick operations remain efficient, and staff are able to carry out their tasks in a safe environment.

One highly efficient storage solution uses multi-tier shelving, with the added benefit of requiring little or no additional automation to optimise storage and access the full height of the warehouse

Why use multi-tier shelving in warehouses?

Multi-tier shelving is used in warehouses to bring additional levels to the interior space which are designed to make the best use of the available footprint and optimise the number of products that can be stored and picked. Furthermore the design ensures that each product is kept in the optimal location for pick operations to remain efficient.

Each floor or level is independent of each other and can be designed in a bespoke manner to ensure products are located in the most appropriate part of each floor, with the best fit of shelving size. Each multi-tier level is fully accessible via sets of stairways and linked via walkways for easy and efficient movement between floors.

Multi-tier shelving is particularly useful for businesses selling small products or items that need to be handpicked with no reliance on materials handling equipment such as forklift trucks. However, should forklifts be required for some unloading of pallets, for example on the ground floor level, the design of the storage structure must cater for the additional weight and width tolerance to ensure they can manoeuvre to their locations in a safe way. SKUs can be moved to and from higher levels using pallet gates, lifts and conveyors.

Our multi-tier solutions for warehouse storage

Multi-tier shelving is used by warehouse operators across the globe. As leading designers and suppliers of warehousing solutions, the team at SEC Exports can advise you on the best option for your business.

As the official distributor for Dexion, we have full access to a range of high quality products including the Hi280 Multi-tier shelving system. With greater storage capacity than standard shelving, the Hi280 allows for a structural mezzanine floor and is ideal for warehouses needing to store large quantities of different products.

Just one of our many multi-tier shelving projects included a bespoke shelving storage design for Fuji Oil in Ghana which encompassed a two-tier shelving system over two floors, with an independent mezzanine floor. Across the ground and first floors we installed over 100 bays of Dexion shelving plus one aisle of Dexion pallet racking for additional storage.
