Autonomous Mobile Robots

Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) are increasingly affordable options for SMEs to automate key warehouse activities, such as picking, replenishment or sortation.

Autonomous Mobile Robots offer efficiency, flexibility and intelligence to provide an automated solution to numerous operational tasks within a warehouse or distribution centre.

AMRs replace traditional fulfilment tasks aimed at increasing pickers efficiency and productivity across warehouse operations. Typically order picking equates to around 55% of operating costs, so eliminating travel time for order picking can significantly increase productivity.

Autonomous Mobile Robots are commonly used in warehouse and logistics environments for order picking operations, zone picking, goods-to-person, autonomous piece picking or flexible sortation.

Their in-built intelligence allows them to move around a warehouse or DC facility independently, without the need for pre-defined routes or walkways and are particularly well suited to assist with e-Commerce and 3PL operations.

Types of AMRs

There are several types of AMRs that add value to picking operations across the warehouse environment, including:

  • Tote-retrieval robots autonomously locate the required tote with the order item(s) from the racking storage structure and manoeuvre this to a designated manual packing or work station. The required item is removed from the tote ready for order processing, and the robot then returns the tote to a specific location within the structure for subsequent picks, or for replenishment.
  • Mobile picking AMRs can be fitted with picking tools such as grippers, forks or conveyors which allow the AMRs to pick SKUs for a specific order. For these operations, the robot receives an order requiring one or more items, then navigates autonomously to where the product is located, picks the item and places it either in a compartments or tote, ready to take to a designated manual packing or work station.

AMRs for the SME Warehousing Sector

The scope of autonomous systems with their ability to accurately carry out a range of warehouse tasks means that SME logistics businesses are able to meet increasing consumer fulfilment demands through enhanced productivity, accuracy and speed, while keeping labour costs down.

At SEC, our intelligent warehouse designs are based on in-depth data analysis of operational data that drives the optimal storage solution, including the type of automation required for maximum efficiency and productivity.

Due to the ongoing innovation and increasing implementation of this technology, we are able to integrate the use of AMRs into our storage designs suitable for warehouse operators of all sizes, providing flexible and scalable solutions with positive ROI.

Benefits of AMRs in Warehouses and Distribution Centres

  • Enhanced pick performance
  • Enhanced agility for picking operations
  • Reduced labour costs
  • Reduced order errors
  • Indirect cost reduction (e.g. less lighting required)

Innovative Warehouse Design for 3PL using AMRs

Nearing completion is a highly intelligent warehouse design involving an innovative AMR robot-system. The Robo-shuttle is a fully-automated tote-retrieval robot, that acts in a Goods-to-Picker capacity in environments up to 8m in height, or higher if combined with a multi-level storage structure. This system will reduce the quantity of pickers required by almost 90% allowing a transition from scores of pickers down to low single-digits, through the implementation of a small hive of tote-retrieval robots that eliminate virtually all travel distances for picking and put-away.

3D Visualisation of AMR design

As part of our design process, we are able to use our innovative in-house design skills to create a highly accurate 3D visualisation or walkthrough of a warehouse solution. This enables our customers to enjoy a fully immersive Augmented Reality or Virtual Reality experience of every aspect of the design solution, and agree the proposed layout before anything is built.
