Warehouse Optimisation
Warehouse optimisation includes physical automation via strategic analysis of warehouse operations and improvements to processes.
Read MoreData is the lifeblood of our own business, and our machine learning tool, ELSA, revolutionised our approach to warehouse design by developing an Artificially Intelligent (AI) Design-Bot to work alongside our expert design team.
A bespoke solution developed by SEC’s in-house warehouse design experts, ELSA’s role is to leverage our clients’ data and utilise sales order, product and volumetric data, alongside cutting-edge machine-learning techniques, to classify ‘similar’ Stock-Keeping-Units (SKUs) into pick-face bands. This process is essentially a highly sophisticated form of ABC analysis, classifying products that should stored in similar types and sizes of pick-faces for optimal efficiency.
Our designers work with ELSA to refine these classifications by analysing the behaviour of each SKU and simulating virtual environments based upon seasonal data and growth projections. This analysis then suggests the correct types and sizes of pick-face that balances pick-efficiency and replenishment cost.
In a warehouse environment, order picking and replenishment typically equates to more than 50% of the total cost of the facility, of which half is travel time. Consequently, pick-face selection and sizing are the most critical design decisions in most warehouse operations.
ELSA can run regularly to provide an updated view when demand patterns change, new product ranges are introduced or new product portfolios acquired.
Portmeirion’s e-Commerce sales expanded significantly during the pandemic, and they subsequently needed to increase their ability to handle the growing number of orders within the existing warehouse facility.
Our in-depth analysis involved a complete assessment of operational data using our in-house machine learning system ELSA, which allowed us to demonstrate the optimal solution based on efficiency gains and return on investment.
Using ELSA, we designed and installed a range of efficient storage equipment within an enclosed mezzanine floor including carton-live and static shelving aligned to the SKU order processing data, to provide an efficient pick & pack area.
Our unique use of data and the in-depth degree of analysis we undertake for each warehouse layout, can best be demonstrated by our data-driven designs and extensive post-sales analytical support winning SEC Storage four prestigious national logistics awards for warehouse design; including most recently, Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce’s Award for Best Use of Technology.
In addition, SEC Storage won the prestigious Lloyd’s Bank National Business Awards 2020 in the category for ‘Data Excellence’. An award that recognised the most innovative use of data within any sector of the UK economy.
