Breakout spaces have become an integral part of modern workplace design

They offer employees a change of environment, allowing them to step away from their desks and engage in more collaborative and creative activities. But breakout spaces go beyond just providing a change of scenery – they play a crucial role in fostering innovation and driving forward-thinking ideas.

When most people picture a breakout space, they think of lounge areas, canteens, break rooms and staff rooms. These are essential areas within any business, and providing workers with a designated space to switch off and recharge, or work in a more relaxed setting, can be invaluable.

We introduced stylish kitchen tea-points on both floors, with the larger first-floor tea-point featuring a breakfast bar complete with break-out furniture and pendant lighting. A full height, LED-backlit feature wall was embedded within the corridor dry-lined wall on the first floor, along with the installation of an oak block wall cladding feature in the reception area, helping to set both spaces apart.

Benefits of Breakout Space Fit-Outs

Breakout spaces enable colleagues to socialise, which can help strengthen trust between workers to create stronger, more productive teams. These communal spaces can also help provide space for flexible working and hot-desking; if your teams are often on the go or work in various locations, communal working spaces are ideal for someone looking to set up quickly and get stuck into their tasks.

Breakout spaces play a crucial role in enhancing employee well-being and satisfaction within the workplace, and are viewed as a vital aspect of an agile office. These comfortable and inviting spaces provide numerous benefits that contribute to a positive work environment.

Enhancing Employee Satisfaction and Engagement

Breakout spaces create an atmosphere where employees feel valued and appreciated – by offering a dedicated area for relaxation and socialisation, businesses and organisations are able to foster a sense of community and connection among their employees. This sense of belonging translates into higher job satisfaction and improved employee engagement, which will ensure employees are working hard to complete their tasks to their highest potential, and produce great results.

Furthermore, breakout spaces allow employees to recharge and rejuvenate, leading to increased productivity and creativity. Employees can take a short break from their work tasks and engage in activities that help them relax and refocus. Whether it’s enjoying a cup of coffee, playing a game, or simply socialising with colleagues, these moments of respite can improve overall job satisfaction, motivation and focus.

Promoting Work-Life Balance and Reducing Stress

A significant benefit of breakout spaces offices is their ability to promote work-life balance. Having a designated area for breaks encourages employees to disconnect from work and take time for themselves; this separation between work and personal life is essential for reducing stress and preventing burnout within your teams.

Employees who have access to breakout spaces can take advantage of brief breaks throughout the day, to engage in activities that promote relaxation and well-being. This could include activities like meditation, stretching, or even reading a book. These moments of self-care contribute to a healthier work-life balance, resulting in less stress and improving the overall employee experience.

Breakout spaces are a valuable addition to any workplace; they not only enhance employee well-being and satisfaction, but also contribute to a positive work culture and increased productivity. By providing comfortable and inviting spaces, organisations can create an environment where employees feel valued, engaged, motivated and supported.

Fostering Experimentation

Breakout spaces also play a vital role in fostering a culture of experimentation and out-of-the-box thinking. By providing employees with a space where they can freely explore new ideas and concepts, companies can encourage innovation and push boundaries.

Equipping a space with whiteboards, sticky notes, and prototyping materials allows employees to visualise and test their ideas in a collaborative setting, promoting experimentation, development and continuous improvement.

Breakout spaces can serve as a hub for cross-functional collaboration, bringing together individuals from different teams and departments. This integration of diverse perspectives sparks creativity and leads to the development of groundbreaking ideas.

Breakout spaces are not just a trendy addition to the workplace – they are essential for promoting innovation and driving businesses forward. By showcasing real-life examples of successful implementations and emphasising the role of breakout spaces in fostering experimentation and out-of-the-box thinking, companies can create truly innovative work environments.

Design Considerations for Breakout Spaces

There are multiple things to consider when constructing a breakout space within your office – the type of space you create will affect the way it is used. For example, a quiet secluded nook is most likely to be used for concentrating on a task for a short period of time, or getting some quick meeting planning and preparation done. If you design a space that is themed more around collaboration, or designed for multiple people to use at once, you can probably expect it to be utilised by small groups of people at a time, brainstorming ideas or planning. When designing a breakout area for your office it is important to consider:

Area and Space

  • Determine the optimal size and location for breakout spaces within the office layout
  • Consider factors such as available space, number of employees, and proximity to workstations

Furniture and Interior Design

  • Select comfortable and versatile furniture, including lounge chairs, sofas, and coffee tables
  • Incorporate aesthetically pleasing aesthetics and colours to create a welcoming environment

Technology Integration in Breakout Spaces

  • Incorporate technology to support employee needs, such as charging stations, Wi-Fi access, and collaboration tools
  • Ensure a seamless integration of technology without compromising the relaxing atmosphere

Flexible Workspace Solutions in Breakout Spaces

In breakout spaces, it is important to have flexible workspace solutions that can cater to various activities and preferences. By exploring the use of modular furniture and versatile layouts, companies can create a dynamic and inclusive environment for their employees.

  • Modular Furniture: Modular furniture allows for easy rearrangement and customization of the space; with movable pieces such as tables, chairs, and storage units, employees can create different settings that suit their needs – whether it be for collaborative work or individual tasks.
  • Versatile Layouts: Having versatile layouts in breakout spaces enables employees to have options when it comes to their work environment. For example, having a mix of comfortable seating areas, standing desks, and quiet zones can accommodate different work styles and preferences.

Additionally, adjustable furnishings play a crucial role in creating a flexible workspace. Furniture that can be easily reconfigured and adapted to meet changing needs allows for a seamless transition between different activities throughout the day.

By considering the following key considerations, organisations can ensure that their breakout spaces are well-designed and contribute to employee well-being, satisfaction, and productivity.

  • Flexibility: Breakout spaces should be versatile and adaptable, allowing employees to use them for various purposes and activities.
  • Comfort: Prioritise comfortable seating, natural lighting, and ergonomic furniture to create a welcoming and relaxing environment.
  • Privacy: Incorporate elements that provide employees with privacy when needed, such as dividers or enclosed spaces.
  • Technology: Ensure breakout spaces are equipped with the necessary technology and connectivity to support collaboration and productivity.
  • Aesthetics: Pay attention to the aesthetic appeal of breakout spaces, considering colour schemes and incorporating plants or artwork to create a visually appealing environment.

It’s important to remember that creating an effective breakout space strategy does not end with the initial design. Ongoing evaluation and feedback are crucial to ensure that breakout spaces continue to meet the evolving needs of employees, and produce the best results for your business in the modern office environment.

You should regularly gather feedback from employees to understand their preferences, identify any areas for improvement, and make necessary adjustments accordingly – this feedback loop will help organisations ensure that breakout spaces remain effective and continue to contribute to employee well-being, satisfaction, and productivity over time.
